Brandon Overton has won big races all over the country during his illustrious career and the Evans, Georgia standout can now say that he is also a Lil’ Bill Corum Memorial winner! Brandon tamed the bad-fast Tazewell Speedway on Saturday night to collect a $21,000 payday with the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series presented by Coltman Farms Racing and fueled by Sunoco. After timing in fifth fastest overall during the qualifying session, Brandon won his heat race and hounded early race leader Kaede Loudy for the first 23 circuits of the main event.

The popular driver known as “Big Sexy” then made a power move to grab the point away from Loudy on lap 24 and never looked back. Brandon led the remainder of the 75-lap contest to win by a 0.642 of a second over apparent runner-up Sam Seawright. In post-race inspection; however, Sam failed the droop check due to a part failure and was scored in the nineteenth finishing position.

The misfortune for Seawright meant that the entire finishing order moved up a spot at the pay window. Kaede Loudy, who led the first 23 laps from the pole, was paid $10,000 for an impressive second place showing. Eighth-starting Dale McDowell moved up five spots to round out the podium in third and was awarded a $6,000 payday. Hudson O’Neal, who won on Friday evening with the tour at Wythe Raceway, placed fourth at Tazewell and received $4,000 for his efforts. Ninth-starting Mike Marlar grabbed the final position inside of the top five and left “The Taz” with a $3,000 paycheck.

“First off, this win is for my guys,” said Overton while looking at his Riggs Motorsports crew members in victory lane. “They busted their butts this weekend. The track - as soon as I got the lead - I could feel it starting to latch down. It was my race to lose after that. I was just trying not to crash with the lapped cars and just be smart about things.”

Brandon Overton’s thirteenth career Spring Nationals Series win came aboard a Riggs Motorsports-owned #76 Longhorn Chassis with sponsorship in part from Budweiser, Dude Wipes, Heartbeat Hot Sauce, Garnto Southern, Riggs Fiber, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Big Dog Stump and Tree Service, RW Powell Construction, Supply Chain Management, Muscle Factory, VG Performance, Bilstein Shocks, and Boswell Oil Company.

A total of 20 Super Late Model competitors were on hand at the Tazewell, Tennessee oval on Saturday for the sixth edition of the Lil’ Bill Corum Memorial. Hudson O’Neal started off the night by laying down the quickest time in MRP Fantasy Racing hot laps with his lap of 11.070 seconds. Benji Hicks then went out late during FK Rod Ends qualifying and posted the quickest time with a lap of 11.618 seconds. The trio of heat races were won by Kaede Loudy, Brandon Overton, and Hudson O’Neal. The 75-lap headliner was slowed by only two early caution flags, both involving Dakota Smith.

Coming into the night Rogersville’s Jesse Helton was looking to notch his third Sportsman win in a row. Josh Collins of Powell recorded the fastest lap in qualifying to secure the pole position for the $1,000 to win feature, sharing the front row with Helton. With the drop of the green flag Helton used the outside line to take the lead on the opening lap. By the tenth lap Helton had stretched out to almost a full second lead over Collins.

With the laps winding down it looked like Helton was cruising to his third victory of the season. On lap nineteen bad luck would strike as Helton’s car lost a right rear wheel as he was coming out of turn two, ending his night. Collins would inherit the lead and go on to capture his first Sportsman win at Tazewell Speedway. The victory came in the Brucebilt Performance, Shorty’s Shock Service, Thomas Electric, American Racer Tire, Ez Racing, Patriot Bail Bonds, FK Rod Ends, Rhonda’s flowers and Gifts, Harbins Handyman, Skin by Hannah, Simpson Excavating, A Church Called Love, K-Town Poker League, Hilltop Recycling, Stealth Carbs, Team PPM, Wallace Auto Sales sponsored Rocket Chassis.
